What to bring
Plan on bringing the vehicle and your DMV renewal notice. Your notice will say if a smog certification is required and if it has to be done at a STAR station. Mid-sale, or bringing a car from another state? Carry any documents DMV has sent you. No notice on hand? Call us before heading over.
How your smog check works
Check-in
Walk in during open hours, or book online to reserve a time.
The inspection
We register the vehicle with the state's smog system and run the test its model year calls for. Most current vehicles get an onboard-computer check and a visual check of their emissions parts.
Going over the results
We explain the inspection report before you go. The report lists the result and any open safety recalls, and a passing smog certificate is good for 90 days.
Our coupon page has the current price.

What if it doesn't pass?
We can't promise a pass to anyone. The vehicle's condition decides the result. Should yours not pass:
- You'll understand why. We walk through the inspection report and explain each failed item in everyday terms.
- The repair is your call. Any licensed test-and-repair or repair-only station can do the work; BAR's Auto Shop Locator lists them.
- The retest happens here. Back within 30 days of the paid, failed inspection, the car gets our $30 smog retest (see how the retest works).
A battery disconnect or a code reset clears the car's readiness monitors. Give it a week or two of everyday driving so they finish before the retest.

Frequently asked questions
What does a STAR station do differently?
STAR is a California Bureau of Automotive Repair program. Stations in it must meet the performance standards the BAR sets, and the BAR continues to evaluate them. When a DMV notice requires a STAR station, only a STAR station can certify that vehicle. We test vehicles without that requirement too.
What do I need for my smog check?
The vehicle and the DMV renewal notice. Bring the documents DMV sent you as well if the car is being sold or was registered in another state.
How often are smog checks required in California?
Most vehicles need a smog check every two years at registration renewal. Gasoline vehicles eight model years old or newer are generally exempt from that requirement and pay a smog abatement fee instead. Smog certification is also commonly required when ownership changes and at a vehicle's first California registration. Your DMV notice tells you what applies to your vehicle.
What if my car fails?
We explain the report, a licensed repair station you choose fixes it, and our $30 smog retest applies within 30 days.
Can you smog a hybrid or a diesel?
Hybrids follow the gas-car schedule, and we test them. For a diesel, call (760) 690-2360 first so we can confirm we can test it; diesel rules turn on model year and weight rating.
Do I need a smog check for a car from another state?
Generally, yes. Transferring a car's registration to California from another state normally comes with a smog requirement, apart from exempt vehicles such as pure EVs. Bring the car and anything DMV has mailed you.
